Blooming Geraniums In Early January in Delaware County PA
by Gloria
There is an artic blast heading our way, the first of the season. Winter has been above normal in temperatures until this week here in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Today was the day to take these hearty plants off the three season unheated porch to ensure they do not freeze during the artic cold.
I have really enjoyed having geraniums in bloom until January. Yes I am also enjoying my Christmas cactus blooms, but there is nothing like a geranium with its red colors and the wonderful smell the plant gives each time I remove a wilted leaf or flower grouping. The plants will survive the winter like they have for many years by entering into a dormant period, since I do not have many windows with good sun to house all my plants.
Once the longer days return after winter, these plants will be returned to the porch and perk right up to give more blooms of brilliant red.

I don't have any Geraniums so I will have to be content with my Christmas Cactus. But in a few short months, I will be starting various herbs and veggies to go into the garden after the last chance of frost has passed. I can't wait.
We were at 60 degrees today and am already looking toward the wonderful warmer Spring weather! Stay warm Gloria!
Hi Gloria - Be sure to put little scarves on their necks to keep them warm! Thanks for the reminder--I am going to have to pull in some plants tomorrow night here in South Florida!
We have had lovely weather lately. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we have zero snow days this year.
Thanks for sharing your flowers. You should get over to Longwood Gardens for the current show, A Longwood Christmas.
Happy New Year!

Doug and Gloria - we woke up this morning to see all our windows staemed up or steaming up the temperature dropped so fast overnight ..... almost 30 deg F ..... and today we had almost $900.00 worth of propane delivered. Hope it does not stay this cold very long.
The temps in the Greater Sacramento region have been in the low 60s the last several days. While we are woefully behind on rain and snow fall, I certainly enjoy the sunny warm days.
They are my favorite flower and were my mother's and grandmother's favorite too. I love the color variety and how you can make new plants from the cuttings. Happy 2012.
Ours are blooming, too, after Russel gave them a severe pruning at Thanksgiving.
It has been so warm here I am afraid that the leaves will start to bud! I hope you sty warm during the artic blast!
Guilty as charged by Jim in his comment! I've been doing time-lapse photography, a picture each day of the blooms as they sneak their heads above the foliage and bloom.
