Blogs Can Beget Spam
Blogging is a very public act. We bloggers put ourselves out there in order to bring in business, to network and to make friends. Along with that exposure we open ourselves up to those potential and unwanted attacks from Spammers.
Earlier this year I slowly started to get spam on my Hyper-local Posts; a few here a few there. Seemed like a handful of people were testing out their English.
Then it was like a crescendo, until one day a few months ago it was non-stop, every 5 minutes. The Spam was spreading out to all my Localism posts over the last year.
I called ActiveRain and was told to stop the Outside Comments for a while on the Settings Page. “Give it a rest for a few weeks”. I've turned the Commenting Setting on here and there, but the spam just starts up again.
Thank you to Judi Boad for re-blogging Michael Thornton's post "Spam, Spam and More Spam..." which inspired this post.
Now because of those two posts I have the Monty Python’s tune “Spam” stuck in my head.
Happy Blogging Everyone!

Hi Joni, Yes it is something that just seems to be getting worse. Just part of it all.
You have a great holiday weekend.
Gloria
The spammers are also attacking featured posts. I had five spam replies on one last week and zapped them. What a pain.
Gloria, I've noticed alot more spam on posts, not my own as much as on others. WHat a nuisance. I report and if its my own, I delete.
What if you could determine if an email is SPAM and then automatically redirect it to all of the people you received spam from and then store it into SPAMJUNK folder for later Spamming????
Lets see, send out one spam email and receive 1000 in return, interesting idea.
Hi Gloria~ I have learned alot about Spam prevention from my friends in Active Rain the past few days! Now that I know we can turn off outside comments, I can enjoy my eggs, bacon and sausage, without spam.
Like the lady in the restaurant said: I Don't Like Spam!
Thanks Gloria! :}
Hey, Gloria I included this post in Last Week's Favorites. Loved the video. Have a great Sunday!
Hi Gloria. I have seen a lot of Spam on other's post too, but I haven't seen any on my own posts since I turned off that public comments option. Deleting them is always a pain for anyone.
Great post. I saw the link in Patricia's post and came here to comment.
Gloria, I too have noticed an increase in spam the past week or so. It is annoying to say the very least!
That Monty Python clips is perfect!! I like SPAM . . . only because I report it and reap the 10 pts per pop! Otherwise it's annoying. (Pat's pick sent me your way!)
Doug & Gloria - Spamming is time consuming and can be annoying. Thank you for sharing very good information about spamming.
Unfortunately, spam is a side-effect of social media. We put information out there, and we definitely get information or spam back:-) I don't know if I have become immune to it, or I am not getting as much as I once did. I get more phone solitications now. . .Even though I'm on the "Do Not Call" list.
I guess you know you're popular when you've been targeted by spam! Sigh...

Hi Patricia, Everyone is probably getting spam here on AR. It is hard to keep up with. Thanks featuring this post in your weekly highlights!
Have a great week!
Gloria
Hi Leah, Yes I see it on other posts also. Reporting it can give you points. But deleting them is good also.
Hi Ted, Have you tried your idea? If so what happened?
Hi Judi, It is good to learn from each other here. Yet I don't think I can learn to like spam with my breakfast foods. I guess you have to grow up with it like scrapple here in SE PA.
Hi Jerry, Lucky we have that on/off switch!
Hi Gita, Thanks for stopping by! Hope all is well with you!
I have my outside comments turned off. Without the spam, though, you can't get 10 points each time you report a spam comment, but it just got too bad about a year ago. I was spending more time reporting spam comments than I was actually doing things that could bring me business.
