Philadelphia is Host To The Oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade In the Country1920 was the first year of Philadelphia's Thanksgiving Day Parade and this Thursday the parade will go on again! Floats depicting cartoon characters will be making their way down the Ben Franklin Parkway to the Art Museum from 8:30 AM until around 12 Noon. It is a fun event for children and the young at heart.
I have fond memories of going to this parade with my dad and 2 of my sisters, bundled up in warm clothes and standing near the Art Museum watching the floats go by. Of course my mom was preparing for the feast back home as we enjoyed ourselves on the streets of Philadelphia with many other people.
The parade can also be watched on television. Channel 6 ABC in Philadelphia will start broadcasting the parade starting at 8:30 AM. For more information visit the parade website.
If you enjoy parades and have never experienced this Philadelphia offering, then start your holiday by bundling up, take the train downtown and join the crowds of people lining the streets to experience this great Philadelphia tradition!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!!

Doug,
Interesting. I think the Thanksgiving date has changed in the last 100 years... did they always take palce in November?
Goota be chilly out there...
Wow..sounds like so much fun! I love a good parade...although this time of year I like to watch them on TV!!!
Doug and Gloria, thanks for posting about the Oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade...I learned something new today, as I had no idea it took place in Philadelphia! :)
Leilani
Jon, Gimbel's Department Store was the creator of this parade according to Wikipedia, so I'd imagine it has been in November all these years. Yes it can be rather cold, but there are vendors who sell hot things to drink. And they sell those hot packs to warm up your feet and hands. Gotta be prepared!!
Deborah, Parades can be fun!
Leilani, You are welcome!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Gloria
The History Chan nel confirms it was the Gimbels Parade and it had balloons !!!!!
Mike, There will probably be balloons this year too.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Gloria
Doug and Gloria - It sounds like a wonderful tradition. Cocoa Beach doesn't have a Thanksgiving parade but we have a great Christmas lighted boat parade through the lagoon and canals. Have a great Thanksgiving!
Good for PA! The oldest? That's quite a distinction!
I love a good parade! We must all be watching History channel tonight! I've been watching the history of Thanksgiving and the traditions. Did you know it wasn't an official federal holiday until 1941? Happy Thanksgiving!
John, Lighted boad parades are great too!
Debi, Not as well televised as Macy's in NYC.
Silvia, I did not know that about the offical holiday status. Thanks for the info.
