Stink Bugs
For the past few evenings I have been visited by a Stink Bug as it flies around the lamp over my computer. It hangs out on some papers near by, walks a little, then flies again. So I Googled them and what I found out was interesting to me. Apparently they seem to have arrived in South Eastern Pennsylvania in 1998 from Japan and China. Allentown seems to be the place where they entered Pennsylvania.
I have never killed one so I do not know the smell they give off that renders their name. All I know is that they find a way into a house or building and hang out. They can be found in large groups if you don't watch out but they are relatively harmless to humans but can cause damage to plants of course.
To me they are curious insects that don't bother me for they don't bite, sting or attempt to irritate me as other insects can. They just hang out, move slowly and look like a tiny armored tank.

Every now and then, either one or all of my three cats will discover a stink bug who wandered inside my Santa Fe home. The cats watch it like a slow motion movie. It appears they know better than to even attempt to touch it, never mind eat one. If I discover them in their trance, I just slide the intruder under some paper and move it like a good relocation Realtor.
I can shed no new light on their arrival in Santa Fe only that they were here before I relocated in the early 90's from D.C. I had never seen one back east. Now, I tell my clients it is best not to step on them.
Doug, I haven't killed one since I was a kid, I do remember them having a foul odor but it has been long enough ago that I couldn't describe the smell.
Emily, It does sound like your cats learned the hard way. Funny how you say you find them in their "trance", so true.
Tony and Darcy, I guess you don't want to experience the smell again either.
Doug...
Your story (to me) is an interesting one.....especially the part where you looked them up on the Internet. In the old days, you had to have had an in-house encyclopedia to discover answers to questions. If not, it was a trip to the library and that's if it was worth it to go......
Thank you
I don't believe I've ever seen a Stink Bug, up close and personal! I don't really whack any harmless bugs either! Afterall, we may not understand their place in the greater scheme of things!
