Dogwood Trees in Bloom in Delaware County PA
The dogwood trees have been in bloom in the Delaware County, PA area for a week or so now. They are a hardy bloom and come in two colors: white and pink. They are a true harbinger of flowers to come as the spring weather warms the area.
"Dogwood", an interesting name, my curiosity got the better of me so I Googled it.
"Dog-tree" entered the English language by 1548 and was transformed to "dogwood" by 1614. One theory says that it was derived from "dagwood", those thin stems of very hard woods used for making "dags" or daggers.
Dogwood trees grow in most U.S. states excluding the hottest and driest areas of the country. The wood of most dogwood trees is dense and of a fine grain and has been used to make shuttles for weaving fabric, tool handles and small items that required hard wood. Artisans favor using it for small projects like mountain dulcimers, fine inlays and it has been used in the making of golf club heads called "woods". The early model laminated tennis rackets were made out of thin layers of dogwood.
Dogwood trees are an attraction in this area every spring. They usher in the warmer weather with their beautiful flowers and many offer up berries that birds enjoy in the fall as they change over and prepare for their winter months of sleep.
