The Annual Blob Fest in Phoenixville, PA

Tonight (July 9th) the borough of Phoenixville in Chester County, Pennsylvania held its annual Blob Fest in honor of Phoenixville's part in the movie "The Blob".  Phoenixville is located northwest of Philadelphia and tonight there was the annual re-enactment of the scene where all the movie goers ran frantically from the movie theater to escape The Blob.  It is the same movie theater that Steve McQueen visited in 1958.

Come out and enjoy the Free Outdoor Summer Concerts series in Rose Tree Park in Media.

Concerts start at 7:30 PM, Wednesday at 10 AM. Bring your own chair or blanket, arrive early with a picnic dinner and make an evening of it under the sky. Refreshments and snacks are sold at the park.

• Wednesday 10 AM - June 30 - The Great Holtzie: Comedian For Kids

• Thursday 7:30 PM - July 1- Eric Mintel Quartet

• Friday 7:30 PM - July 2- That's Amore!  Italian favorites sung by Main Line Opera Guild

• Saturday 7:30 PM - July 3 - John Hoey Orchestra

• Sunday 7:30 PM July 4 - Upper Darby Sousa Band

All concerts are scheduled for one slot only with no rain date. If a concert is canceled due to inclement weather a recorded message will be left on the Park office answering machine (610)565-7410. Hope to see you there!

Dine Outside In Media, PA Wednesday Evenings Until September 15th

It is summertime and eating outside just goes with the season. Well Media, Pennsylvania seems to have hit on something good in that area in that every Wednesday evening from 5 PM to 10 PM, the downtown part of State Street is closed to traffic and the street is transformed into a place for dining, listening to music and shopping only.  This is the third season for "Dining Under The Stars".   So if you are looking for a truly different way to enjoy a summer meal consider a meal on State Street!

Mother's Day Breakfast – Ukrainian Style In Delaware County, PA – May 9th

Mother's Day is a great day to get together with family and friend's over a great meal. New Years Day and the Philadelphia Mummers Parade

It's a New Year in a New Decade after a Blue Moon last night.  The future is unfolding and again one is given a new start that concurs with everyone around the world.  The energy of a New Year is always powerful to me for the traditions of this day evoke hope, joy and fun.

One such "fun" tradition is the Philadelphia Mummers Parade.  If you are from the area, you know what I mean: the Mummer's Strut, the Comics, the Brigades and the String Bands (my favorite). This parade may not be your cup of tea, but you cannot deny the fact that this annual family event has an impact on many in the Philadelphia area who either participate in the event, watch it on TV or spend the day standing on Broad Street near City Hall in the cold.  This is the 110^th Anniversary of this uniquely Philadelphia event.

Regular folks participate in this parade; some families have done so for a few generations.  They prepare and do fundraisers all year long just to get the chance to parade the streets of Philadelphia and for a few minutes to perform in front of judges to hopefully win a prize.  They also do this, I imagine, for the strong community feeling that is evoked with such an event. 

If you are unfamiliar with this parade you must check it out sometime to see the amazing work that is put into the costumes, to hear the sound of the String Bands and to see something that you can only see in Philadelphia.  The performers march and play their instruments in almost freezing weather.  Having been raised in the Philadelphia area the unique sound of the string bands is something I will always enjoy hearing, watching the performances of the bands as they move in unison with each other with their glitter and plumes is truly a fun way for me to mark the New Year and to feel the fond memories of New Years past.

You may say this parade is all silliness, but you can't deny the fact that the people participating in this event and the onlookers on TV or those who brave the cold are all having fun and what a way to bring in the New Year!   Happy New Year Everyone!       (Written by Gloria)    Photo by R.
