Swarthmore, Pennsylvania - A College Town

A house in Swarthmore, PASwarthmore, Pennsylvania is a college town located in Delaware County which is just southwest of Philadelphia. Swarthmore College is the school that gives this borough it's flavor and adds to its beauty. Single Victorian homes abound in this town along with local amenities such as a food co-op, a library with ongoing events engaging the community, a local theater that has put on the Nutcracker every Christmas season for years, to a recycling center that is open everyday to help community members do their part to have a low impact on filling the local landfills.

SEPTA's R3 train has a stop in town within walking distance to Swarthmore College's campus and is the means of transportation for many residents who work in Center City Philadelphia. Just off of the train station are a few of the downtown streets lined with stores such as a local hardware store that offers the feel of years gone by, a music shop that offers music lessons, an earthy clothier that supports artisans, a few places to eat and a knitting store.

Swarthmore, PennsylvaniaThe streets are lined with trees and many are named after colleges and universities like Yale, Princeton, Cornell, and Vassar. Many of the houses in Swarthmore are a work of art. There was no waste of craftsmanship on some of these gorgeous structures.

Swarthmore College brings people in from all over the country and the world which adds to the flavor of Swarthmore and helps to keep it vibrant. One can partake in events offered at the college through out the year as well as stroll it's ground. The Scott Arboretum is located on the college campus and offers a wonderful display of plant life through out the growing season, with wonderful colors in the spring to the wonderful colors of autumn. And if you are into starry nights, the campus has an observatory with times open to the public.

For 23 years Swarthmore has been a "Tree City USA" member and is now the first city on the east coast to be an "EPA Green Power Community".

If you are looking for a place to live that embraces the cultural life that a college town can offer and love older Victorian homes, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania may be exactly what you are looking for.

These tastefully built townhouses were built in 1987 and sit back off of Edgmont Road Route 352. Cambridge Square is made up of clusters of townhouses with roughly 240 in total. The clusters range in size from four attached townhouses to six connected townhouses. In each cluster the roof heights and angles alternate from the one it is attached giving a sense of variety between these two and three story townhouses. Some units have dormers in the front, others do not, variety again. To add to this feeling of variety, many of the fronts of the townhouses are set back or forward a bit from its' neighbor. All this variation adds a nice touch in helping to make each unit seem a bit different from its' neighbor.

Many of the townhouses have an outside deck which over look these open spaces. The approximately 78 units were built between 1998 and 2001. They are built on roads with names that conjure up textile mills and other manufacturing faculties: Sackville Lane, Hillsboro Mills Lane, Kincaid Mills Lane, Columbia Mills Court, Rockbourne Mills and Dundee Mills Lane. A tributary to Ridley Creek runs near the properties giving a tranquil setting to those who walk these quiet streets as a way to enjoy the outdoors. Media, Pennsylvania - Everybody's Hometown

Doug Durren and Gloria Todor"Everybody's Hometown" is the motto of Media, which is the County Seat of Delaware County, PennsylvaniaMedia is located at the end of SEPTA's (South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) Regional Rail R3 and Trolley Line 101 that takes travelers to downtown Philadelphia and beyond. The trolley runs on State Street which is a bustling tree lined street with businesses of all types, from long established businesses like Tancreed Dress Shop and Deals to relatively new ones like Trader Joe and Ten Thousand Villages.

One can easily spend time on foot in Media visiting art galleries, shopping in stores that sell handcrafted items or clothes, to all the necessary stores one would find in a town that houses the county court house. All this walking can make one hungry, but that is not a problem for there are ample eateries to satisfy almost any palette from Sushi to pizza. The local library hosts events for children and the theater brings in local and outside talent to grace their hall.
                                             Doug Durren and Gloria Todor
Doug Durren and Gloria TodorGlen Providence Park is tucked away just a few blocks beyond the end of the trolley line offering a place for a stroll down a hill and around a pond. In addition to the trolley there are buses that go through town, and there are major highways like I-95 and the Blue Route 476 that are just minutes away.

Doug Durren and Gloria TodorHousing in Media is varied, from older Victorian homes to new townhouses, apartments above stores to rooms in a motel.

Trees are a big thing in Media and that is not just by chance. A conscious effort has been made over the years to keep Media a town with trees and as a result Media has received the "Tree City USA" designation. The young trees that presently line State Street from the theater on up to the end of the trolley line were planted to replace the mature trees that had become ill.

To understand Media's motto "Everybody's Hometown" plan on visiting Media at various times of the year. From Street Fairs in the summer to strolling State Street during the Christmas season with all of the trees shining with lights and music amplified on the street, to the town wide Yard Sale in the fall.  Oh and don't forget the "2nd Saturday Media" every month.

So whatever the reason, don't miss the opportunity to make Media your hometown, even if you live in another town.
