How To Declutter Those Sentimental Things Before Moving
There are many of us who have a hard time letting go or decluttering our homes of those sentimental things, the things that have no use other than they serve as a reminder of a past experience or a loved one.
I have moved a handful of times since my mother and father have died and there was a period when I just did not have the room, nor could I afford to pay for storage for things that I would never use anymore and amongst them were sentimental things, reminders of my parents and times from my past.
It was a hard process for me to “let go” of many things but I was able to do so in a few ways.
First I created a space in my home where I could put things that were one step out the door. I would put items in that space and each week I would take a bag of things to Goodwill or Purple Heart. Sometimes certain items would sit in this spot for weeks before I could actually let them go.
I also began to honor my sentiments by documenting my process: that is I dedicated a notebook to writing and saying goodbye to these items. It was cathartic for me. It enabled me to let go of things and not have regrets after an item was gone for good.
Other ways of dealing with decluttering sentimental things would be to ask a close friend to help you in this process. It would have to be someone you know who would honor your wishes if you got too emotional in the process. Someone you really trust.
Another idea would be to have a very informal Potlatch. A Potlatch is an Indigenous American way of giving to others. You invite friends and family to come to your home during a one or two hour open house where the idea is for them to leave with something if they choose. Of course you would have the items clearly marked that were intended for this occasion. It is a way of knowing that your items are leaving your home in the hands of someone you know.
In no way am I an expert on this subject and in no way am I suggesting you have to get let go of things if you absolutely do not want to. I am just putting forth ideas of potential ways to deal with all those sentimental items weighing you down, that you would like to let go and these ideas might benefit you if you are in need of decluttering to sell your home or to move.
