Saying Goodbye To Your Family's Home - Closure before the ClosingSelling a house is a big deal and if you are selling a house that was part of your family for many years, I highly recommend you reserve time to say good-bye to your family's home before settlement day.
Houses are silent members of a family; they are part of the history of a family. And because of this there is a great sadness, a grieving that grips many sellers as the day of settlement approaches.
I experienced this myself when my siblings and I sold our parents' home after my dad died in 2000. My mother had died 6 years before. This was the house we all grew up in and I felt like I was losing a friend, a quiet friend that was always there for me and now it was not going to be available to me anymore and I was very sad. So I made sure that on my last visit to the house that I had time to be alone, to walk through the house. I even took pictures. I said my good-bye to that great house.
In all the hustle and bustle of selling a house, one may not think of this step or even feel it is important or feel foolish to be crying about selling a house. But if you are like me, make sure you say good-bye to your quiet friend. A formal closure is important to help with a major change and selling a family home is a major change.
