What to do with pets when selling your homePets are treasured members of the family, but they can be a problem when you are ready to list your home for sale.

There are many potential buyers who just do not like pets, are afraid of them, or are allergic to them. Those people do not want to see any sign of a pet in the home they are considering purchasing.

If you have pets, and want to sell your home, there are some guidelines you should follow.

First, you need to remove your pets for showings. Put Fido in the car and take him to the dog park. Don’t just leave him in a crate in the utility room. Put the cats in a pet carrier and take them to the neighbor’s house for an hour or two while there are buyers in your house. Potential buyers should not have to worry about accidentally letting your cat or dog out, or worry about being scratched, bitten or jumped on by your dog or cat.

And second, you will need to get rid of all of the pet evidence before a showing.

Remove pet beds, pet bowls, litter boxes, pet crates and pet toys for all showings. You can get a large garbage bag to put the litter box in, and take it to the garage. Tuck it in a corner, out of sight and out of mind.

You will also need to get rid of pet odors for showings. If you have pet blankets or bedding that smells like Fido, wash everything and tuck it away prior to showings. If you don’t have time to wash it all, put it in a large garbage bag and put the garbage bag in the garage.

And another very important thing to do is to clean the yard of all pet evidence prior to showings. Potential home buyers will walk all around the house to check brickwork, siding, the roof and a number of things that are on the exterior of the home. The last thing you want to happen is for a buyer to step in poop while looking at the exterior. Clean it up!

Exotic pets need to be removed from a house for showings also. I once showed a house that had a large aquarium housing a huge snake. My clients took one look at the snake, and ran out the front door saying they were not going back in.

All pet owners love their furry friends, but when selling your home, they can present problems. So make plans in advance for your pets for those times when potential buyers are looking at your home.
