What Is An Egress Window?  And When Are They Needed?

Real Estate Delaware County PAAn egress window is a window that can serve as an exit for an adult from a room that is located in the basement level of a house. Homeowners who have unfinished basements often want to turn their basements into a finished basement if the ceilings are high enough.  When doing such a conversion the basement is transformed into a living space where people will be spending more time and safety codes often require a means of escape if a fire were to happen in their home.

Most townships issue building permits for remodeling basements that require two means of escape or egress from a finished basement, usually by a door and a window.

Since basements are usually in the ground that means thought must be given to this matter of egress.  If there is no space outside of a home to build a stairwell out, then there may be the option of installing an egress window that requires minimal space on the outside and a larger than average basement window.

Egress windows are large windows that open easily from the inside and can let an adult have access and escape to the outside in emergency situations.

Before you plan on upgrading your basement to a full finished basement be sure to check with the building inspector in the township or borough where you live to ensure you follow the requirements for safety codes.
