15th Annual Backyard Bird Count February 17-20, 2012

15th Annual Backyard Bird Count February 17-20, 2012

Do you enjoy watching birds?

Better yet, do you feed birds in your backyard?

Well if you do, you can put your watching to good use by participating in the 15th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count that happens Friday February 17th through Monday February 20th, 2012.

real estate delaware county paAll you have to do is go to the Great Backyard Bird Count website to register yourself and log in your counts as directed on the website.  A minimum time requirement of 15 minutes per day is all that is needed, but you can certainly give it more time each day, which will be fun and more helpful to the count.

It’s a great way to feel connected with other birders in the area and around North America.  Your count would be a real big help to those who use this information to better understand what is going on with birds in the continental US, and ultimately it helps the birds.

Even if you count only a few species of birds, your count is very important.  So give it a go and help document the comings and goings of birds in your backyard.

Have fun!

Cleaning House For The Newly Hatched In Delaware County

Cleaning House For The Newly Hatched In Delaware County

real estate delaware county paToday I was in the garden for a few moments and came upon this robin's egg.
It seems there are babies hatched nearby and mom or dad cleaned out the nest of this now unneeded egg to make the nest cozy for the new baby robins.

Since a pair of robins are still building their nest out in front of the house, the location of this nest is a mystery.  With all the trees now sporting their warm weather attire it is very hard to locate nests up high in the leaves.

The blue color of a robin's egg has always been one of my favorite colors.  I have yet to see a nest full of eggs in person.  Robins nests are usually built too high for my viewing.  Mom and dad robin know how to build away from predators and they know how to keep a clean house, I mean nest.

Do you have any robin egg stories or photos to share?

Red-bellied Woodpeckers

"Red-bellied Woodpeckers", not a name I would have choosen for this bird.  Sure they have red on their belly if you look closely, but by far their heads are more pronounced with red then their bellies.

If you want to have them visit your feeders, along with other woodpeckers, plan on having suet in your yard and in no time you will have them as regular visitors to your feeders.  They will eat other seed if there is no suet, but by far in my experience they enjoy suet.

Red-bellied woodpeckers are medium sized birds and seem to enjoy speaking at length.  They seem to announce themselves, as they get closer to your feeders, and they will just keep talking as they leave the area.  I am never really sure if they are talking to another bird since they seem to travel alone.

These photos were taken with my Nikon Coolpix L110.  The best I can offer. (Gloria)

Meandering In The Snow

We had 4 inches of snow last night and a bird or two left their meandering trail in the snow.
