Sad News For Me Today
By Gloria
Today I was told my cat Sunny has a tumor that is best left alone. It is located inside her mouth in her jaw and the Vet said it would be a hard recovery from surgery for a cat that is over 17 years old.
She has been my companion for roughly 16 years and she is the closest thing to a child I have ever had since I have no children of my own.
I rescued Sunny from an abusive situation when she was a year and half old. But the rescue was also a separation for her from her brother Trevor, the favored one, who was not up for adoption at that time: Sunny was the abandoned one. That adjustment period was hard for Sunny, but we bonded in a good way, not a needy way.
Her life started with me when I lived in Seattle in a ground level apartment and where I would let her out on a leash and where she would bring me birds at my feet as I worked with the door open in the warmer months of the year.
She traveled with me and my friend Sarah as I moved back home, cross country in a van on a week long adventure. She shadows almost my every move in her waking hours and always greets me at the door. She is not a needy cat and had been healthy all her life until now.
At 17 plus years old, Sunny is still very spry, jumps onto the bed every morning to help me greet the day and often chooses the “sunny” spot in the window close to my desk when I am working from home.
I knew something was not right, yet I kept hoping it would go away. Today I found out it will not and I need to prepare myself for the inevitable.
I have enjoyed my time with Sunny; she is the only pet I have ever had other than the shared family pets in my youth and a few small birds or two.
Sharing my story here is my way of dealing with my great sadness and of paying homage to the many good years I have had with this wonderful creature, this beautiful Japanese Bobtail, my friend, Sunny. May the time she has left be without much discomfort.
