Pennsylvania Law Makers voted in October 2008 to put this Legislation in place to help protect consumers when dealing with contractors in 2 ways: #1 by offering consumers the knowledge up front that a contractor is registered with the state and #2 by offering consumers legal recourse if a fraudulent situation occurs while under contract with a home improvement contractor.
Doug and I became aware of this legislation since Doug is still a practicing contractor in addition to being a Realtor®. He registered on line and obtained his HIC # and now all of his printed material must show this number.
Before hiring a contractor look for their HIC #. If you are not sure if a particular home improvement contractor is registered with the State, call the Bureau of Consumer Protection at 1-888-520-6680.
