Detachment with Compassion

Years ago I worked in a hospital as staff support in nursing stations and was able to observe doctors, nurses, aids and so forth in action.  The people who had direct contact with patients in need, and I would wonder how are they able to separate out the really hard stuff they see intimately day in and day out so they do not get burned out?  I thought it has to take its toll on some level.

Now I am a Realtor and more and more my work brings me into the lives and really hard situations of people in need: pending foreclosures due to job loss or illness, or being unable to keep responsible tenants in their investment properties, short sales, etc.  Often I hear more than I want to hear, but that is part of how it is right now.  I have always been able to listen to people in need for the most part, but there are times when having to listen day in and day out with many clients is very hard.

DetachmentSo I think back to the health care workers I observed and I remember thereBleeding Heart was always some form of detachment that was required, a skin of protection that seemed to help these workers continue for many years in their work.  Detachment with compassion.  To me it is finding the balance with detachment and compassion that is the key to being an effective long term Realtor.

How is it for you when you are invited into a client's hard world?

How do you strike the balance?
