Philadelphia's Buses Go Hybrid

Philadelphia's Buses Go Hybrid

Real Estate Delaware County PAHave you noticed the new buses on the streets of Philadelphia and in the suburbs?  Have you noticed how quiet they are and how they have those fin like things on the top of the buses?  Well those buses with the fins on top are diesel-electric hybrids and those fins on top cover the battery power packs needed to make the buses a hybrid.  I do not ride buses much these days, I did a lot in my youth, so I only became aware of this when I happened to see the "hybrid" emblem on the side of a bus in Media.

Recent track repairs on the Media trolley line means buses are doing the trolley route until the end of this year, according to Martin, the bus driver, who I spoke with at the end of the trolley line on State Street in Media.  Martin also informed me that there is another style bus on the road that is also a hybrid; it is the precursor to this model.

SEPTA (South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) took advantage of the Federal Grant money under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to upgrade their fleet of buses.  So this transition has been under way for a while now and when all is said and done, by next year 2011, one in every three buses on the road will be a hybrid!  This is a big deal since SEPTA operates a lot of buses in and around Philadelphia.  Well thumbs up to SEPTA for thinking ahead and becoming one of the leaders in creating jobs and reducing the harmful emissions output with their new fleet of hybrid buses
